PCOS/PMOS Awareness Month: What It Can Mean for Your Fertility
September is PCOS/PMOS Awareness Month, bringing attention to one of the most common conditions affecting reproductive health and fertility.
For many people, PCOS/PMOS first becomes a bigger conversation when they're ready to start a family. Irregular periods that once felt like an inconvenience can suddenly raise a much bigger question: Am I ovulating regularly?
Why Can PCOS/PMOS Make It Harder to Get Pregnant?
PCOS/PMOS can disrupt the hormones responsible for ovulation. Some people ovulate inconsistently, while others may go months without ovulating at all.
When ovulation doesn't happen regularly, there are simply fewer opportunities each year for pregnancy to occur.
But having PCOS/PMOS does not mean you can't get pregnant.
In fact, once we understand whether and how you're ovulating, there are several ways fertility treatment can help.
What Does Fertility Treatment Look Like With PCOS/PMOS?
There's no single treatment plan for everyone with PCOS/PMOS.
For some patients, medications that encourage ovulation may be enough. Others may benefit from IUI or IVF depending on factors like age, ovarian reserve, sperm health, how long they've been trying, and whether there are additional fertility concerns.
That's why getting a fertility evaluation can be so valuable. Instead of assuming PCOS/PMOS is the reason pregnancy isn't happening, your fertility specialist can look at the whole picture and determine what may actually be standing in the way.
When Should You See a Fertility Specialist?
If your periods are very irregular or absent, you don't necessarily have to wait the traditional 6 or 12 months before asking for help.
Irregular cycles can be a sign that you aren't ovulating consistently, and an earlier evaluation may give you a clearer understanding of what's happening.
This PCOS/PMOS Awareness Month, remember: a diagnosis may explain part of your fertility story, but it doesn't determine how that story ends.
Getting answers about your ovulation, reproductive health, and treatment options can help you understand what your next step toward building a family could look like.
